KI Studios Frequently Asked Questions about Car Stripes

KI Studios — FAQs

About KI Studios

KI Studios is based in San Luis Obispo, California with 25 years of experience designing and producing high‑performance vehicle wraps, racing liveries, and vinyl stripes for track and street. We operate as an online‑only studio and ship kits nationwide.

Vehicle Specialization and Fitment

Which vehicles do you specialize in?
KI Studios focuses on race‑ready and street‑legal high‑performance cars. We are most well known for our racing livery clients driving Porsche GT3 Cup and GT4 RS Clubsports. We also design and produce vinyl stripe kits for Porsche, Mclaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini race and street models.

Custom design work
We create custom racing liveries and vinyl stripe decal kits for a wide range of exotic vehicles. Our experience includes race cars, road rallies, and personal styling, with our racing liveries being the most famous.

Factory and OEM products
KI Studios does not sell or manufacture factory or OEM parts.

Materials Durability and Paint Safety

What vinyl do you use and is it paint safe
We use high‑performance cast vinyl from reputable brands such as 3M, Avery Dennison, and Orafol. Cast vinyl is paint‑safe and far more durable than calendared vinyl. Calendared vinyl can be suitable for short‑term use but does not offer the longevity or performance of cast vinyl.

Durability expectations
Outdoor durability typically ranges from 6 to 12 years depending on color, exposure, and maintenance. Durability ratings are not warranties; proper care (garage storage, regular cleaning, waxing) extends life, while constant exposure or pressure washing shortens it.

Design Process and Fitment
How we ensure accurate fitment
We design in full‑scale vector files, account for material stretch on curved surfaces, and add panel‑specific bleed so graphics align across seams. These hands‑on techniques, refined over 25 years, deliver better real‑world fitment than relying solely on generic 3D models or UV projection.

Ordering, Production, and Shipping

Turnaround times

  • Stripe and decal kits: typical production time 3–5 business days before shipping.
  • Custom livery design: typical timeline 5-7 business days before printing.
  • Pre‑designed kits are available for tight deadlines and go straight to production.

Local pickup and business model
We do not offer local pickup. All wrap and decal kits are produced fresh per order and shipped via UPS. After 18 years of installation, KI Studios transitioned to an online‑only model in 2019 and ships all products from our San Luis Obispo California.

International shipping
Stripe and decal kits ship internationally. Wrap kits ship to the United States only due to oversized roll packaging. International shipments may be subject to local import taxes, duties, or tariffs collected at delivery; these charges are the buyer’s responsibility, due to UPS before delivery.

Installation and DIY

Should I DIY or hire a professional?

  • Full wrap kits: require an experienced installer for panel removal, complex seams, and proper alignment.
  • Stripe and decal kits: designed to be DIY friendly using the wet‑apply method.

Installer guidance
For help choosing a qualified installer, see our guide: How to Choose the Best Car Wrap Shop

What is bleed

Bleed is extra vinyl length that extends past a body panel to allow trimming or tucking at the edges. Some kits include bleed; trimming or tucking is installer preference.

Application Tips and Best Practices

Wet application solution
Plain water is recommended. For large wet applications you may add one drop of mild soap or baby shampoo to the spray bottle to make positioning more forgiving. Soap slows drying and initial tack, so remove transfer tape carefully if used.

First wash after installation
Wash the car before applying graphics. After installation, allow the vehicle to sit in a sunny, dry environment for one full day before the first wash to ensure the vinyl has dried and initial adhesion has set.

Waxing and protection
You can wax over vinyl. We recommend hand washing and liquid wax to avoid white buildup at edges. Spray detailer or spray wax are also safe and effective.

Removal, Resale, and Tools

Can vinyl be removed and will it damage paint?
Yes. Premium cast vinyl is formulated for clean removal and will not damage paint when removed properly. For best results we recommend using a clothes steamer to soften the adhesive and reduce residue.

Returns, Warranty, and Defects

Return policy
Kits are made‑to‑order and therefore non‑returnable. Please verify your order before checkout. If a product is defective or incorrect, KI Studios will replace the kit after inspection if reported within 30 days. See our Terms for full details.

Warranty coverage
Warranty covers manufacturing defects. Improper installation, environmental damage, and misuse are excluded.

Care, Maintenance, and Storage

Cleaning and weather guidance

  • Avoid washing in extreme heat or extreme cold; vinyl can soften in heat and become brittle in cold.
  • Use waterless wash or spray detailer and microfiber towels.
  • Avoid pressure washing directly on edges or seams.
  • Avoid leaving the car outside overnight when possible to prevent dew and pollutants from bonding to the vinyl.
  • Regular waxing helps protect the vinyl.

Storage before installation
Keep kits sealed in the box until ready to install. Store flat or on a clean shelf; avoid repeated unrolling and re‑rolling to prevent tunneling and wrinkles.

Tips for Best Results

  • Install within 30 days of receipt for optimal adhesion.
  • Store sealed until install to prevent and wrinkles
  • Use the wet‑apply method for decals to reduce bubbles and allow repositioning.
  • Hand wash and liquid wax to protect vinyl edges.
  • Use a steamer for removal to minimize adhesive residue and protect paint.
  • Avoid pressure washing and extreme temperature washes.
